NEW GAME FOR THE WELSH RUGBY UNION PROMOTES UPCOMING AUTUMN SERIES
Listen up rugby fans; we‘ve got some great news for you! In time for the Autumn Series this November we’ve created a brilliant viral game for the Welsh Rugby Union, the governing body of rugby union for Wales, that’s bound to get people’s tongues wagging!
RE-CREATING THAT EYEBALLING STAND-OFF
Following the infamous Haka stand-off during last year’s Autumn Series which saw Wales and the All Blacks menacingly eyeballing each other for a good few minutes before the game (much to the crowd’s delight), the WRU wanted a viral game which re-enacted the electric scene. That notorious Haka stand-off now has great significance in Welsh rugby history, and therefore it made sense to base the game on it so that Welsh rugby supporters could relate to the game concept and enjoy re-enacting the scene themselves.
The WRU also planned to send out the game link to their database of subscribers via newsletter, so it was important that the game promoted the 2009 Autumn Series and encouraged people to buy tickets to the games, which are taking place at the Millennium Stadium this November.
“Not a problem”, we said, and with our creative juices already flowing we set to work.
A “STARE-TACULAR” SUCCESS
The end result was Patriotic Games, an addictive game that we’re incredibly proud of where you have to stare out your New Zealand rugby opponents for as long as possible.

To stir up players’ emotions we added video footage of the actual 2008 Haka stand-off to the game’s interface, and the crowd noise which can be heard during game play really adds to the competitive nature of the game.
John Williams, head of communications at the Welsh Rugby Union had the following to say,
The challenge to MCM Net was to come up with a game concept which would appeal to the widest possible spectrum of our existing online followers and to expand that community. What MCM Net have produced in ‘Patriotic Games’ is a simple but incredibly effective and atmospheric online experience which has captured the imagination of Welsh rugby fans from around the world.
As if it couldn’t get any better, the WRU are offering some fantastic prizes to the three highest scorers who submit their details- The first prize up for grabs includes two tickets to Wales vs Australia and a signed Wales rugby shirt, the second prize is a signed rugby ball and the third is one year’s free membership to the WRU supporter’s club.

To work on a game that re-lived such a historic moment in Welsh sporting history was a privilege, not only because you could instantly appreciate that the client and the eventual game’s audience would be so passionate about the subject, but also because the game concept and the whole atmosphere around this event really brought the project to life.
The concentration required as you fight with the mouse to keep staring out the opponent is so intense that you come away feeling like you have been involved in a crunching tackle, and the pressure you feel as you near the last few levels adds to the challenge of the game.
